MAKI – Multi-Mechanisms Adaptation for the Future Internet

The ubiquitous availability of the internet is indispensable in almost all areas of life today. In order to be able to provide networked services and applications efficiently and without disruptions, today and in the future a broad spectrum of communication mechanisms is used. As communication systems and mechanisms continue to specialize, mastering the growing diversity as an integral and easy-to-use component of future communication systems is a key challenge.

Since 01 January 2013, the Collaborative Research Centre MAKI (Multi-Mechanisms Adaptation for the Future Internet) has been researching the mechanisms in communication systems, their adaptation, interaction and ongoing optimization as well as their long-term further development About MAKI I

In the first funding period, the scientists mainly focused on researching new construction methods, new models and procedures for the communication systems of the future (mobile end devices). In the second funding period (starting 01.01.2017, about MAKI II), the core of the network, software-defined infrastructures and concepts of network virtualization were also considered. The holistic view of multi-mechanisms adaptation is the focus of the research of the approximately 50 participating scientists. In the third funding period (starting 01.01.2021), the research is expanding the previous approach in the direction of use in the future Internet. The flexibility, resilience and speed of the communication networks are to be significantly improved.

In order to optimally pursue the goals of phase III, the necessary hardware-related technology expertise is also contributed in close consultation. This enables the development of high-performance technologies to support transitions. Three transfer projects with industry partners have also been successfully established with regard to phase III.
